Since the 1970's we have been sharing "The Starfish Story" with others. "The Starfish Story" is an adaptation of Loren Eiseley's "The Star Thrower". It is a beautiful poignant story about how every one of us can make a difference.
This is a story about a little boy who was on a beach one day. It was in the afternoon, the sun was up and it was a very hot day. There was a little boy running as fast as he could down the beach stopping and picking up things that he found and throwing them into the ocean. After each time he would throw each thing into the ocean he would start running again, as fast as his little legs would take him. He continued to stop and pick things up again throwing them into the ocean.
At least that's what the elderly man saw.
The elderly man went down to see what the little boy was doing. He saw that the beach was covered with starfish. The little boy was running as fast as he could, throwing them into the ocean again and again. The elderly man stopped the little boy and said, "What are you doing?" The little boy said, "The starfish are all washed up on shore and dying."
The elderly man with all his wisdom said, "Look around, there are thousands of them. You can't possibly make a difference." Looking into the elderly man's eyes, the little boy picked up another starfish and said, "Maybe not, but I can make a difference to this one," as he threw it into the ocean.
